Kati Rapian ja Ilona Valkosen Drifting / Drafting rakentaa Itämeren nykytilasta dokumentaaris-poeettisen muotokuvan, jossa meren roskat kohtaa leikin, mielikuvituksen ja yhteisen tekemisen.

Rapia ja Valkonen kiersivät vuosina 2020–2026 neljässätoista kaupungissa ja kylässä Itämeren rannoilla Suomessa, Ruotsissa, Virossa, Latviassa, Liettuassa, Puolassa, Saksassa ja Tanskassa. Paikalliset nuoret keräsivät lähirantansa roskat ja muotoilivat niistä asuja, joissa heidät lopuksi kuvattiin.
Kuvien nuoret ovat perineet maailman, jonka tilaan heillä ei vielä ole päätösvaltaa. Tuhon julistamisen sijaan teos etsii toivoa ja toimijuutta. Ranta jäi aina puhtaammaksi kuin se oli työpajan alussa.

Kirja sisältää 90 valokuvaa sekä tekijöiden haastattelun.
Julkistamistilaisuus järjestetään Tekstin talon Bar Tÿpossa Helsingissä 16.10.2026 klo 17–20. Teokseen liittyvä näyttely avaa uudistuneen WAM nykytaiteen museon uuden WAMX-tilan Turussa 31.10.2026. Näyttelyä täydentävät Läntisen tanssin aluekeskuksen tanssijat, jotka ovat olleet mukana nuorten työpajoissa.

Kati Rapia (s. 1972) on kuvataiteilija, joka tunnetaan kollaaseista, sarjakuvista ja valokuvista. Hän sai sarjakuvataiteen valtionpalkinnon 2018, on Loviisa Contemporary ry:n perustajanjäsen ja toimi ry:n puheenjohtajana 12 vuotta. Ilona Valkonen (s. 1980) työskentelee maalauksen, kollegiaalisen kuratoinnin ja Vieno Motors -performanssikonseptin parissa. HAM Helsingin taidemuseo on hankkinut kokoelmiinsa Vieno Motors: How to Prepare -esityksen käsikirjoituksen.

Drifting/Drafting: Notes on the State of the World
Drifted ashore: a Sinol detergent bottle, turquoise plastic rope, a piece of a skull, driftwood. In the workshop, trash becomes clothing, and in the photographs children gaze into the camera wearing their creations.
Kati Rapia and Ilona Valkonen's Drifting / Drafting builds a documentary-poetic portrait of the Baltic Sea today, where marine litter meets play, imagination and making things together.
Between 2020 and 2026, Rapia and Valkonen travelled to fourteen towns and villages on the Baltic coasts of Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany and Denmark. Local young people collected the litter from their nearby beach and shaped it into outfits, in which they were finally photographed. The beach was always left cleaner than it was when the workshop began.
The young people in the pictures have inherited a world whose state they have no say in yet. Instead of proclaiming doom, the work searches for hope and agency.
The book contains 90 photographs and an interview with the artists.
The book launch will be held at Bar Tÿpo, Tekstin talo, Helsinki, on 16 October 2026, 5–8 pm. An exhibition related to the book will open the new WAMX space of the renewed WAM Contemporary Art Museum in Turku on 31 October 2026. The exhibition is complemented by dancers from the Regional Dance Centre of Western Finland, who took part in the youth workshops.
Kati Rapia (b. 1972) is a visual artist known for her collages, comics and photographs. She received the State Prize for Comics Art in 2018, is a founding member of the Loviisa Contemporary association and served as its chair for 12 years. Ilona Valkonen (b. 1980) works with painting, collegial curating and the performance concept Vieno Motors. HAM Helsinki Art Museum has acquired the script of the performance Vieno Motors: How to Prepare for its collection.
